Tough Choices

What's so tough about loving one another?

When we think about getting healthy, getting out of pain, getting stronger or leaner, then one of the first things that pop into my mind is "Tough Choices".

What if there is something harder than choosing an apple over ice cream?

Choosing to stretch or workout over a drink?

What if it isn't so much about focusing on "self-care" or "loving ourselves" or "being more compassionate with our weaknesses", but rather putting on another pair of lenses and looking at the world from a new perspective?

What brings this to my attention today is having seen that a friend and amazing human passed away recently, and I missed reaching out in time to say hi again for one last time.

It made me think of empty nesters that will tell how much they miss the house being a mess or picking up stinky stocks off the floor from their kids that are all grown up.  There is a finality to death that is a bit more intense and tragic than the kids leaving home, but the time has passed and the moment is still gone forever.

What if we worried less about ourselves and found ourselves loving the ones we love a little more?

What if we made the choice, the really tough choice, to love them when they do the annoying and the stupid and the frustrating things that if THEY knew annoyed us and if THEY really loved US they wouldn't do anymore?

What if we really loved them in those moments more than ever because we will have missed the moment once the moment is gone?

What if we loved the person we don't even like, but we love them because like us they are here and they are alive and they are special and they are amazing no matter what we think of them?  Ok.  Well, maybe that's a bit too tough for a Friday afternoon but maybe you are seeing my point.

The moment will be gone, and it will be gone forever.

These might be the Truly Tough Choices that lead to some really easy choices about what food to eat, whether we should go for a walk or not, whether we should stretch and meditate and find calm and quiet to process the day.

Could it be that the tough health choices are only tough because we aren't choosing to love enough the rest of the time?

Blessings,

Dr Asa
