What is the best thing we can do for ourselves?

I'm going out on a limb here because to make a statement about something being the "best" and implying it is best for "everyone" seems like a pretty bold step.  I will proceed though and  hope it makes sense by the time I'm done writing this.

What is the best ever for everyone?

I think it is something that we were all designed to do.  We have two arms, two legs and stand upright.  We stand upright and when we move we don't typically crawl or climb.  If we don't typically crawl or climb to move our bodies from one place to another, then how were our bodies designed to get there?

I think it is something we don't do much now because we don't have to do it much.  The answer to the question above is walking or running.  Remember the question was how were we designed to get there, and the question I ask in this paragraph is how do we most often get where we want to be?

I think it is something we don't think is very important because it isn't necessarily defined as "exercise".  The answer to the above paragraph is that we sit down.  In order to get where we want to go now we typically sit.  Get to the store?  Sit.  Voyage through the latest Indiana Jones movie?  Sit.  Work?  Sit.  To get most everywhere we want to be we sit now and once we are there we sit.  Sitting is not exercise, but neither is this other thing I'm talking about.

I didn't ask a question in that last paragraph and just skipped to the "sitting theme" for how we get where we want to go.  Sitting is not exercise.  Neither is the thing I believe is amazingly the best for everyone, and so I think this is why it has been lost.

So what am I talking about already?

Well, running is definitely exercise.  Exercise has its time and place and depending on the person (not for everyone) there is a varying degree of intensity required to achieve various levels of speed and distance.

Well, walking isn't exercise and it is something we do little of and has been overtaken by sitting despite the fact that we were designed to stand upright before moving from where we are to where we want to be.

Walking.

I believe that is the answer.  It has even become a phenomenol core strengthening exercise for us today.  Think about this...

Have you ever done a core workout where you were lying on your back, tucking your tailbone and kicking your legs? (flutter kicks)  Then, do you remember rolling over on your stomach or getting on a bench and doing the same in reverse? (reverse flutter kicks)  Did you do these for 10,000 reps?  Probably not, but could you get a similar if not better benefit from 10,000 steps walking?

That was fun.  And I was being a bit silly with my questioning, but hope it helped make more sense of the importance of walking.

Hope everyone is having a great week and ready for the weekend :)
